    How KEYTRUDA Works

    1

KEYTRUDA works by blocking a protein called PD-1 (Programmed Death-1) on the surface of T-cells, which are key immune cells that fight cancer. Cancer cells often express a protein called PD-L1 that binds to PD-1, essentially putting a "brake" on the immune system and allowing cancer cells to evade detection.

    2

By blocking the PD-1/PD-L1 interaction, KEYTRUDA releases this brake and allows T-cells to recognize and attack cancer cells more effectively. This mechanism is known as checkpoint inhibition and represents a fundamental shift from traditional chemotherapy, which directly attacks cancer cells but also damages healthy cells.

    3

KEYTRUDA enhances the body's natural anti-tumor immune response, potentially leading to durable responses that can last even after treatment ends. Unlike chemotherapy, immunotherapy with KEYTRUDA can create immunologic memory, where the immune system continues to recognize and fight cancer cells.
